Why I Support Beczak

Bob Walters
It’s the best place on the Hudson River, by far none, for connecting people to the estuary and the excitement of the river. There’s not a day that goes but that I wouldn’t walk to Beczak’s beach and restore my spirit.” --Bob Walters

Suzy Schwimmer
"It is thrilling for a child to put on waders and pull in a net full of sparkling fish from the Hudson River.  This experience inspires curiosity about the fish and their place within the ecosystem of the Hudson River Estuary.   I support Beczak Environmental Education Center because it provides opportunities for so many children to learn about the Hudson in exciting, meaningful, and memorable ways."--Susan Schwimmer

Robbie Hothan
"Beczak is an asset to the downtown Yonkers community because it's one of the only places a person can actually step into the Hudson River. I support Beczak because it is a place that people of all ages can become aware of how important the Hudson River is."--Robbie Hothan

"Beczak Environmental Education Center is a green oasis in the middle of a city with a living, breathing classroom right outside its doors! Kids that grow up in cities learn to tune out their surroundings but Beczak’s educators foster an awareness of the natural world. It’s a ripple effect. By being introduced to the Hudson River, kids become curious and more aware of the wider world of other environmental concerns such as clean air and water, availability of healthy, affordable food, green energy, sustainability, and so on. The world needs more places like Beczak. It’s an investment in all of our futures."--Roberta McDermott

Kate and Jeff Macaluso

"We support Beczak because we believe strongly in Beczak's mission- teaching the community about the importance of keeping one of our greatest resources, our waterways, clean.  Beczak is also a great community partner and encourages people to learn to love the river through public events that allow access to the Hudson River." -- Kate and Jeff Macaluso

Kathleen Snyder
"Growing up I had the wonderful opportunity to learn about the environment from my favorite middle school life science teacher, my own father.  As an adult, I support Beczak Environmental Education Center so that children in our area have the same opportunities I had to explore nature and develop a sense of wonder for the outdoors.  When I am in nature I still feel that sense of wonder and it encourages me to make decisions mindful of the environment and of those outdoor spaces I have come to love." --Kathleen Snyder

Dana Hart's third grade class visiting Beczak
"Our annual fall trip to the Beczak Center is the anchor for our study of the Hudson River Valley for my third grade students.  The total experience at Beczak--the interactive displays and aquariums, the incredible seining adventure and the Estuary Model program--gives my students a firm foundation for our studies for most of the year.  As we learn about the water cycle, fish anatomy and food webs in the river and forest woodlands in class, I constantly refer back to our trip to Beczak, which really sets the stage and effectively grounds the students' learning.  My curriculum would not be as rich without our annual visit to Beczak."-- Dana HartScience Teacher, Ethical Culture Fieldston School

"Think global, act local!"
John Magioto and Catherine Mulhern
"Beczak is "our" local environmental effort.  Cathy and I feel the educational efforts at Beczak will have a lasting effect on how our community experiences and regards the Hudson River and the surrounding area.  We can look at the River every day, but pulling a fish out of the seining net reminds us that we all depend on clean water for life.  The health of the Hudson River is primary for us so funding Beczak makes the most sense.  We love the H2O programs, the access to the river, and the bonfires!"
